There are a few basic movement skills that every athlete should master. The first of these would be a pull up. This movement is directly relevant to swimming because the patterning of the arm motion and where power and force are generated from are very similar. The mistake most athletes make is that they focus heavily on pulling on the hands and wrists. They usually neglect their core and especially their legs. Controlling your entire body is the key to a successful pull up. Carl Paoli has a great video about the basics of great pull ups:
